Termbases.eu: a complete tool for building and sharing terms collections Print

Written by Fabrizio Bianchi

termbases.eu is a Terminology Management Software (TMS), that is, a web tool that allows you to build, export and share databases of terms and their translations, and to retrieve the information easily. As a tool for translators and technical writers it represents a valuable addition to your translator gadget belt and a boost for productivity.

It is possible to try out termbases.eu for free, build several termbases (which stands for terminology databases) and even share them publicly in order to get an idea of its potential for workgroups.

All you have to do is register an account, login and click on Add a new termbase. From there, it is quite straight forward:

  • the first information you will be requested to add will be the name of the new database and a description. Later you can come back to this screen to change this info and/or to make your database public.

  • once on the main screen of the database, you can add languages and subjects, which work as categories for your terms.

  • finally you can add terms, and once in the Add Term screen you can choose which subject your new term falls under, add a Preferred term for each of the languages of your choice, together with the proper pronunciation; if you chose the Simple mode, your form ends here, while in the Full mode you are also given the possibility to add the Plural form, the Genitive form, the gender, the source for that preferred term in that specific language, a definition and a source for such definition.

  • completing the insertion of a number of terms in public mode would allow you to set your termbase as public while giving you the opportunity to see how easy and complete it would be to retrieve information from termbases.
After checking out the free version of termbases.eu and realizing that for your translator or technical writer job it would be a really valuable tool, you may want to consider the commercial version of the product, which makes available a very wide range of interesting features such as:
  • Multiple users support, organize users in different groups

  • Very detailed access configuration

  • Improved user interface

  • Show and hide, drag and drop content panels

  • Quick search of terms

  • Detailed search by term's and concept's attributes

  • Relations between terms

  • Configurable fields at concept, term and concept-language level

  • Commenting terms and concepts

  • Term's statuses

  • Import data from TBX, CSV

  • Export data into TBX, XLIFF, CSV, Excel

  • Google translate integration: translate term by another term in concept

  • Predefine sources and subjects to be used in the termbase

For all those of you interested in contacting the developer and tuning in for news and new features I would suggest to follow @TermbasesEu on Twitter.
