First of all, keep in mind that the heat is the number one enemy of lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion). If you mainly use your laptop at home, plugged to a wall AC socket, it is best to remove the battery and store in a cool place. Low temperatures, in fact, slow down the normal chemical deterioration that occurs in all batteries. In particular, experts recommend to discharge the battery down to about 40% of its full charge, then to remove it and keep it wrapped in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator, at an ideal temperature of 4 º C. Secondly, if possible, avoid using up the battery. Unlike older Ni-Cd battery powered equimpment, that profit from being occasionally run down completely, lithium-ion batteries last longer if kept at a level of charge between 40% and 100%. Running Li-ion batteries flat when you have to is fine, unless happens more than once for every 30 partial recharges approximately. Even if you take every precaution, however, a lithium-ion battery will start showing signs of deterioration two or three years after manufacture. This is true even if a battery has never been used, due to the changes in its chemical composition. As a consequence, it is not advisable to buy a spare battery unless you immediately use one. In any case, follow the same indications for preserving it when one is not in use. Don't forget: always check the manufacturing date printed on the box when buying a replacement battery. In fact, discounted batteries or special offers have often been left on the shelf for one or two years. This means that most of their life has gone even before you start using them.
