A quick troubleshooting guide to find a solution to error messages generated by any software (first of all Trados).

There is nothing worse than a dreaded error message showing up on your screen during a job. What can you do? We have outlined the steps needed to find a solution to any kind of errors.
  1. Click on the F1 key. Click the online help and search a keyword related to the error in the index or in the table of contents. It seems a dummy thing to do, but a common saying on the Internet reads: "the difference between an expert in computers and a non-expert, is that the expert reads the Help."
  2. If it exists, consult the manual on paper (or *.pdf). Sometimes the online help is not the most complete.
  3. Perform a search on the support site of the program, first in the FAQs, then in the Knowledge Base. For Trados: http://support.trados.com, now http://www.sdl.com/services/services-sdl-support/trados-support.htm.
  4. Perform a search in a Yahoo! or Google group related to the program (if it exists, of course). For Trados: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TW_users/; for Wordfast: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wordfast/
  5. Perform a search in a specialised forum. For Trados and other CAT tools start from ProZ forums: http://www.proz.com/forumsearch
  6. Perform a search in Google with the following words: <error code> <program name>
  7. Post a message in a public forum (one of the groups mentioned above), giving full details about the problem.
  8. If you have support service included in the software license, contact the support service.
